USS Arleigh Burke Arrives in Constanta, Romania

By Lt. j. g. Robinson McMillan, USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) Public Affairs Officer

The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) arrived in Constanta, Romania for a scheduled port visit, Dec. 5, 2021.

This is the ship’s second port call since arriving in the Black Sea on Nov. 25. The ship previously visited Varna, Bulgaria, Nov. 26-28. While in the Black Sea, Arleigh Burke is conducting routine operations to ensure maritime security and regional stability.

While in Constanta, Arleigh Burke’s crew will have the opportunity to experience the rich history and culture of the city.

“Visiting Romania feels like home because of how well we are received,” said Cmdr. Pete Flynn, Arleigh Burke’s executive officer. “We are truly fortunate to have such strong NATO allies and partners in the Black Sea.”

Since August, Arleigh Burke has patrolled the Barents, Baltic, Black and Mediterranean Seas, all within the Sixth Fleet Area of Responsibility. Throughout this patrol, Arleigh Burke has operated alongside a variety of NATO allies and partners, including ships from Standing NATO Maritime Group (SNMG) 1. The ship’s previous port calls on the patrol include Tallinn, Estonia and Helsinki, Finland.

The ship’s visit to Constanta follows a previous visit by the U.S. Sixth Fleet flagship USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20) and fellow Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Porter (DDG 78), who completed a port visit in the city, Nov. 12-14.

Arleigh Burke is one of four U.S. Navy destroyers based at Naval Station Rota, Spain, and assigned to Commander Task Force 65 in support of NATO’s Integrated Air Missile Defense architecture.

U.S. Sixth Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.

Sanatate !
